Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What is the Lokelani (Damask) Rose, and why is it central to your brand?

The Lokelani Rose is the flower our entire brand is built around, because it’s said to carry the highest vibrational frequency of any living organism — and higher vibration is connected to greater health, which is the whole foundation of our brand.

The Lokelani Rose (Damask Rose) supports the whole self, not just skin — it’s prized worldwide for benefiting the body, mind, and emotions alike, easing stress and lifting mood as much as it nourishes skin. That’s why our brand exists in service of this flower and what it represents: real health, from the inside out. We grow and distill it directly on our Maui farm rather than sourcing it from a supplier, and we add rose into nearly every blend we make, because it elevates the potency and quality of everything it touches.

What does “small-batch, farm-to-bottle skincare” actually mean?

It means each bottle traces back to plants grown on our own land, rather than ingredients purchased in bulk from an outside supplier. Because we’re limited by our farm’s actual growing season and harvest size, we make smaller batches more often instead of mass-producing — which is slower, but keeps every bottle closer to the living plant it came from.

Why is natural, organic skincare more expensive than drugstore brands?

It mainly comes down to how the ingredients are sourced and made: growing, hand-harvesting, and slow-distilling plants yields far less product per batch than manufacturing with synthetic, lab-made ingredients. Our oils and hydrosols come from a small working farm, harvested and distilled in small batches rather than mass-produced, which costs more but means nothing is diluted or filled with cheaper synthetic substitutes.

Why does soil health matter for skincare potency?

Plants absorb their nutrients from soil, so the healthier and more alive the soil, the more nutrient-dense and aromatic the plant will be — and that translates directly into the oil or hydrosol we distill from it. This is part of why we invest in Syntropic, chemical-free farming methods rather than sourcing generic wholesale ingredients grown for volume instead of quality.

Is your skincare suitable for men?

Yes. Our face oils, body oils, and hydrosols are unisex—plant oils and hydrosols work the same way on any skin, regardless of gender. Many of our customers are men using our Haleakala Body oil, Lemongrass hydrosol, Aloha Blend, Clear Skin Blend (night time), laka goddess, as a simple, one-step moisturizer, and our Herbal Salve for everyday skin repair and also moisturizer. If you want something low-maintenance, a single face oil (laka goddess ) plus a hydrosol mist (breu branco) is a full routine in two steps. Now, if you want to minimize to one product, either do just the Laka Goddess (with a more grounding scent) or just the herbal salve for the face, as long as it’s a thin layer.

Product Knowledge

Why do your products smell so good — is that natural or added fragrance?

Every scent in our products comes from the actual flowers and plants we distill or infuse — we never add synthetic fragrance or perfume oils. Because the scent is the plant itself, it can vary subtly from batch to batch depending on the season and harvest, the same way a real rose smells slightly different bloom to bloom.

What is a hydrosol?

A hydrosol is a flower-infused facial mist that hydrates, tones, and refreshes your skin instantly — a lighter alternative to a face oil, and a step up from a traditional toner.

It’s made by steam-distilling fresh flowers, which captures the plant’s benefits — including natural antibacterial and skin-supporting properties — straight into the water. Ours come from flowers grown on our farm in Haiku, Maui (Lokelani rose, plumeria, gardenia, tuberose, pikake, puakenikeni, magnolia, and more), with nothing else added — just one flower, distilled.

Are hydrosols better than most common toners?

Most toners are water mixed with alcohol or synthetic actives to tighten pores or strip oil, which can leave skin dry or irritated over time. A hydrosol does the same toning job — refreshing skin and prepping it to absorb what you apply next — without alcohol or synthetic ingredients, so it hydrates instead of stripping.

How do I use a hydrosol?

Use it anywhere on your body as a light, hydrating mist — it doubles as a toner, a gentle daily moisturizer, and a natural antibacterial refresh.

Think of it like water for your skin: just as your body needs water to function well, your skin needs that same light hydration to stay balanced, clean, and supported. A quick mist gives your skin exactly that — hydration, natural antibacterial support, and a light layer of nourishing plant oils, without any heaviness.

Can hydrosols also benefit your mood?

Yes — hydrosols work on two levels at once: skin care and aromatherapy. The same natural compounds that support your skin also carry scent straight to your brain, which is why misting can shift your mood in the moment — calming you, lifting your energy, easing tension, or helping you focus, depending on the flower. It’s a simple ritual that cares for your skin and your state of mind at the same time.

What’s the difference between a hydrosol and a facial oil?

A hydrosol is a light, water-based mist distilled from flowers, best for hydrating and refreshing skin throughout the day; a facial oil is a concentrated blend that seals in moisture and delivers nourishment over time. Think of the hydrosol as your hydration step and the face oil as your sealing/nourishing step — many people use both.

How do I choose the right blend for my skin type?

Start with what your skin needs most: hydration (Aloha Blend or Lokelani Rose), balance for oily, acne or blemish-prone skin (Clear Skin Blend), all-around restoration (Laka Goddess), or targeted care for the eye area (Maka Nani). If you’re not sure, our Lokelani Rose Oil Blend works well as an everyday option for most skin types, since rose is naturally balancing, and regenerative rather than heavy or drying. When in doubt, choose based on how your skin feels that day — oily/combination skin does well with lighter blends (Clear skin or Lokelani Rose), while dry or mature skin benefits from richer ones ( Everlasting , Laka Goddess, Aloha face and Lokelani Rose).

Can pregnant or nursing people use plant-based body oils?

Many people use gentle, plant-based body oils during and after pregnancy, but some essential oils are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it’s worth checking the ingredient list of any specific product and talking to your doctor or midwife first. Our Ua Hapai Belly Butter was formulated with this season of life in mind (good for the mamas and the babies)— take a look at its ingredient list and share it with your provider if you have any questions. Other products you can confirm with your doctor that are usually safe are also the Lokelani Rose Hydrosol and the Lavender and Witch Hazel

How long does a bottle of face oil last? How about a large bottle of Hydrosol?

With daily use, our 15ml (0.5oz) face oils typically last 6–8 weeks using once a day the 4 drops indicated, and our 100ml (3.4oz) size - using between 2 to 3 times a day lasts for 3 to 4 months, but we hope you are using it more than that!! Giving your skin what it needs with more consistency . Because there are no synthetic fillers, a little goes further than you’d expect. Store your bottle away from direct sunlight and heat to preserve freshness.

Can I use Lokelani products if I have sensitive skin?

Essential oils and natural fragrance are safe for sensitive skin. Therefore, many people with sensitive skin do well with our products, since we don’t use synthetic fragrance, dyes, or fillers — but natural doesn’t automatically mean risk-free, since real plant oils and hydrosols can still trigger a reaction in some people. We recommend patch-testing any new product on your inner arm for 24 hours before applying to your face, especially if you have known sensitivities to essential oils or florals. Our hydrosols are generally the gentlest starting point for sensitive or reactive skin and the lighter ones are the Lokelani Rose Hydrosol, Magnolia, Pikake and Plumeria Hydrosols.

What order should I apply my skincare products in?

As a general rule: cleanse, then hydrosol (mist or pat on), then face oil, then eye oil if you’re using one — going from lightest/most water-based to richest. Oils should generally go last, since they help seal in whatever you applied underneath. If you use sunscreen, that always goes on top, last, in the morning.

Do face oils clog pores?

No. We choose lightweight, non-comedogenic oils in the right concentration specifically for facial skin, so they absorb rather than sit on top and clog pores.

Our face oils are built around botanical essential oils (like Lokelani rose, jasmine, and sandalwood) anchored by a light carrier oil such as evening primrose, chosen because it absorbs easily and calms irritation rather than sitting heavy on skin. We never use dense, pore-clogging oils like coconut oil in our facial formulas, and each essential oil is used in a low, skin-safe concentration — never full-strength — so it nourishes without overwhelming your pores.

Our body oils are formulated differently on purpose. Body skin is thicker and less pore-dense than facial skin, so we can use richer oils and higher concentrations there, giving deeper, longer-lasting hydration where it’s needed most, without any risk of clogging the finer pores on your face.

Do I need a face oil AND a moisturizer?

Not necessarily. For most people, a well-formulated face oil can be your full moisturizing step, since it both hydrates and seals in moisture. Some people layer a hydrosol first (for water-based hydration) and a face oil second (to lock it in), which gives you the effect of a lightweight moisturizer without needing a separate cream. We also recommend also applying the hydrosol after to seal moisture even further.

Can I use face oil if I have oily or acne-prone skin?

Yes — in fact, oily skin often overproduces oil when it’s stripped by harsh cleansers, and a light plant oil can help rebalance rather than worsen things. Our Clear Skin Blend was formulated specifically for this, using oils that support oily skin, blemish-prone, acne prone skin without adding heaviness. Apply a small amount after cleansing; you can always add more if your skin needs it.

Do you have a lotion?

We don’t. We choose butter instead. Why?
Butter`s natural fat structure lets it fully absorb into skin instead of just sitting on the surface(like lotion), nourishing it from within — which is what actually keeps skin plump, elastic, and hydrated over time, not just on the surface. That’s why we build our line around face oils, body oils, hydrosols, and our Ua Hapai belly butter instead of a traditional lotion, and always free of synthetic chemicals.

Most lotions are mostly water with a bit of oil mixed in, and that oil mostly sits on top of your skin instead of soaking in. It can feel hydrating in the moment, but it’s not really feeding your skin. Lotions also usually need synthetic emulsifiers, parabens, and preservatives to keep the water and oil from separating — ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin, and ones we choose not to use.

If you’re looking for a lotion alternative, our body oils or Ua Hapai Belly Butter work beautifully for all skin types and deliver even deeper hydration than a lotion — just one pure, plant-based step instead of a diluted, chemical-dependent one.
